Italian studies lecture (live from Australia): "Violence and rape in the Italian fin-de-siècle: Gabriele D’Annunzio’s La Vergine Orsola." Sponsored by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Honors College. A companion event to the International Film Festival and Symposium on Consent, Australian Italian Scholar Michela Barisonzi will present her lecture:
"Violence and rape in the Italian fin-de-siècle: Gabriele D’Annunzio’s La Vergine Orsola," as part of Italian studies at Texas State University.

Texas State’s French Club (Le Cercle Français) hosted a special international event on Thursday, March 31st. The club teamed up with the French Consulate in Houston to host “French Outside Of France.” This event was a celebration of the French community at Texas State.

Congratulations to Brittany Debaisieux, Nicholas Eastwood, Leticia Patterson, and Broderick Turner for passing the CCIP French Business Exam (French Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris). Three of these four students passed with Honors at the B2 level, generally the highest level obtained by undergraduates.

Dr. Sharon Keefe Ugalde was presented the 2018 “Adela Zamudio Essay Prize” by Feministas Unidas for the best essay in the areas of feminist studies, gender studies, queer studies, and studies related to works of literature and cinema by female authors. The title of the winning essay is: "Las poetas de la generación del 50 y la imaginería indumentaria." The award was presented by the president of Feministas Unidas Tina Escaja at a joint gathering of the Women’s Caucus for the Modern Languages, Feministas Unidas, Women in French, and Women in German during the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association held in Chicago, Jan. 3-6, 2019.

Dr. Susana Lis, specialist in Hispanic American poetry, was invited to the Department of Humanities at the University of Panama campus Changuinola to give a talk on Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Panamanian poetry for students majoring in Spanish Literature, Education, and Sociology. The lecture series was part of the Celebration of the “Mes de la Etnia Negra” or Black History Month, signed into law in 2000. She delivered a second talk on research tools in literature and the humanities in the 21st century, in which she highlighted opportunities for pursuing a master’s degree in Spanish at Texas State University.

The fourth annual Spanish MA Reception was held on 6 April 2018. Hosted by the Spanish Division and sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and the Graduate College, the reception provides a unique space for faculty, alumni, current, and prospective MA students to enjoy light catering, music, socializing, and networking while learning about the MA program. A huge thank you to all alumni, faculty, and students who participated in the event; it was a huge success.

The first annual “Do Deutsch! Day” was a great success, with more than 70 students attending, including current and prospective German majors and minors. Juniors and seniors shared their takes on upper-division courses, special programs, and our student organizations. The event was sponsored by the German Club, Delta Phi Alpha German Honor Society, and the German faculty. A huge thank you to Modern Languages for the delicious pizza!

Gloria Velásquez received the Student Foundation of Excellence Teaching Award for her ardent nurturing of student leadership and her active contribution to the development of the spirit, integrity, and traditions of Texas State University. Alba Melgar, who received the award in 2005, was the first Modern Languages faculty member to be recognized by the Foundation.

German faculty Dr. Valentina Glajar and Dr. Lisa Haegele presented their research on the Cold War on a panel titled “Cold War Spy Stories from the Eastern Bloc.” Also featured were Dr. Alison Lewis (University of Melbourne, Australia), Dr. Corina L. Petrescu (Humboldt Fellow; University of Mississippi), and Dr. Susan Morrison (Professor of English, Texas State University) who presented papers on their archival work on the East German and Romanian secret services. Drs. Lewis, Petrescu, and Glajar are co-editing a book on this topic that will appear through the University of Nebraska Press. This event, organized by Dr. Glajar, enjoyed the generous support and co-sponsorship of Modern Languages, all departments in Liberal Arts, International Studies, the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Honors College.

Faculty News: Dr. Sharon Ugalde, University Distinguished Professor, was recognized as one of the foremost experts on Spanish women poets in a radio program recorded at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Spain. Dr. Ugalde was interviewed by two professors from Spanish universities about her research and about trends in contemporary women's poetry in Spain. Dr. Maria Luisa Gomez Ramirez has received a Non-Tenure Faculty Release for her project, Spanish on the Stage. She will create a website designed to improve listening comprehension of learners of Spanish. It will include links to short dialogues from movie scenes accompanied by scripts, pre-listening, listening, and post-listening activities.

Spanish graduate student Mohit Mehta was initiated into the The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at a ceremony on Sunday, April 9, 2017. Former San Marcos mayor Daniel Guerrero gave the keynote address. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. Texas State became the 325th chapter of Phi Kappa Phi during a ceremonial installation on October 10, 2013. Students must be in the top 10% of their program in their last year to be invited to membership.

Modern Languages faculty Dr. Sharon Ugalde, Dr. Yasmine Beale-Rivaya, and Dr. Catherine Jaffe presented their research on medieval, 18th-century, and 20th-century women in Spain at the Women and Gender Research Collaborative 2017 symposium, "Century of Conflict: Dialogues on Women, Gender, Intersectionality and Militarism," on March 24, 2017. Dr. David Navarro moderated the panel, entitled "Women's Experiences in War and Conflict: Literary and Linguistic Perspectives."

Dr. Moira Di Mauro-Jackson helped organize and presented a paper at the Conference of Italian Researchers on 25 March, 2017 in Houston, Texas. Hosted by the Italian Consulate General in Houston, this event featured Italian researchers from natural sciences to liberal arts, technology and medicine. The conference facilitates the sharing of discoveries and research not only in the United States but throughout the global academic community.

Department of Modern Languages students Estefanía David (Spanish M.A.), Christi Hudgins (Spanish major), and Karina Ramos (Spanish major) were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at a ceremony in Evans Auditorium April 23, 2016. Ambassador Carlos González Gutiérrez, Consul General of Mexico in Austin, delivered the keynote address. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious all-discipline honor society, and admission is based solely on superior scholarship. Only the top 10% of graduate students who have completed one full year of their degree, the top 10% of undergraduate seniors, and the top 7.5% of juniors are invited to be members. On April 22, 2016, University Distinguished Professor Dr. Sharon Ugalde, Dr. Antonio Gragera, Dr. Yasmine Beale-Rivaya, and Dr. David Navarro attended the Second Annual Hispanic Studies Conference hosted by the University of Houston.
Dr. Ugalde gave the plenary address titled: “A New Look for Ophelia in the Cultural Production of Spain.”
Also in attendance were a current graduate student, Alyssa Daley, and former students now pursuing PhDs: Arielle Akines, Isis Campos, Annette Zapata, and Allison Yakel.

At their annual ceremony on April 13, the University’s Student Organizations Council awarded the Boko Award for Honors Organization of the Year to Texas State’s Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi (Epsilon Beta Chapter). Dr. Miriam Echeverría Balboa is Sigma Delta Pi´s faculty advisor.

On Friday, March 25, 2016, University Distinguished Professor Dr. Sharon Ugalde, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Women's Studies.

April 18, 2015
Memorial symposium in honor of Dr. Antonio Candau at Valladolid University in Valladolid, Spain. Dr. Candau was professor of Spanish at Texas State University (1991-2001), and afterwards at Case Western Reserve University until his death from cancer in 2013. The symposium featured the celebrated novelist about whom Dr. Candau wrote his dissertation, José María Merino. During his address, Mr. Merino announced that he will dedicate his new collection of stories to Dr. Candau's memory. There were also talks by Dr. Catherine Jaffe and Dr. Sharon Ugalde from the Department of Modern Languages. He is remembered fondly in the department as a fine scholar and a treasured friend and colleague.
