Biography:

Lucy Harney is professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of World Languages & Literatures. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from The University of Texas at Austin (1997). She has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish and Latin American literature for World Languages and for the Honors College. She also offers two courses in Business Spanish and currently supervises the undergraduate professional internship program for Spanish majors and minors. She has established and directed summer study abroad programs in Guanajuato and Monterrey, Mexico (1998-2009) and in Cuenca, Spain (2018).

Professor Harney maintains an active scholarly agenda, with numerous publications primarily focused on Latin American literature and popular Spanish theater. Her current book project addresses the cultural and media franchise constituted by the multiple literary, theatrical, and film works inspired by the Cecilia Valdés narrative.

She received Texas State’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004 and was named International Studies Professor of the Year in 2009. In 2013, she received the Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievement in International Education. She also served as chair of the Council of Chairs (2019-20) and is a member of several university-level committees. As the Associate Dean for International Programs in the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Harney coordinates the work of the Liberal Arts Study Abroad Council and leads international initiatives for the College.
