Congratulations!! Erin Taylor, class of 2024, is one of twenty-five US undergraduates majoring in German who have been selected to participate in the 2024 Goethe-Institut Summer Academy "Global Teaching and Learning." The funded summer workshop takes place in Dresden, Germany. It is sponsored by the Federal Republic of Germany and its Transatlantik-Programm.

Congratulations to Carol-Ann Veretto for becoming a semifinalist for a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award to Germany! If selected as a finalist, Carol-Ann will have the unique opportunity to teach English and American culture at an elementary, middle, secondary, or vocational/technical school in Germany for 10 months. Wir gratulieren Ihnen, Crann!

The German Program would like to congratulate Dr. Ewa Siwak on receiving the highest honor for teaching at Texas State: the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching! To put it in perspective, only one other faculty member at the rank of senior lecturer/lecturer has ever received this award in the Department of World Languages and Literatures! This is fantastic news for Dr. Siwak, our program, and our students! This has been a semester for the record books! Viele Gratulationen, Dr. Siwak!

Graduating senior Tiana Moritz (Music Performance major/German minor) was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Music History Scholarship award for her essay "The Turkish-German Identity in Hip-Hop" at the annual School of Music BRAVO! awards on May 8, 2023.

Matthew Wasson, Class of 2021, recently embarked on a new adventure. He had caught the travel bug/Fernweh during his study abroad in Munich in 2019. In 2021, he taught German to middle-schoolers as our SPARK intern, and pursued ESL training after graduation.  

In December of 2022, Matthew moved to Casablanca to work full time as an ESL teacher at the Wall Street English language school.

The German Program at Texas State enthusiastically announces that our former student, Gaby O'Connor, dual major German/French, Spanish and Honors minor (class of 2018), now a graduate student in Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Gaby works on the development of human language tools and technologies in multilingual speech. Her project aims to develop a computational model for detecting and processing multi-word expressions in bilingual corpora.

The first annual “Do Deutsch! Day” was a great success, with more than 70 students attending, including current and prospective German majors and minors. Juniors and seniors shared their takes on upper-division courses, special programs, and our student organizations. The event was sponsored by the German Club, Delta Phi Alpha German Honor Society, and the German faculty. A huge thank you to Modern Languages for the delicious pizza!

German faculty Dr. Valentina Glajar and Dr. Lisa Haegele presented their research on the Cold War on a panel titled “Cold War Spy Stories from the Eastern Bloc.” Also featured were Dr. Alison Lewis (University of Melbourne, Australia), Dr. Corina L. Petrescu (Humboldt Fellow; University of Mississippi), and Dr. Susan Morrison (Professor of English, Texas State University) who presented papers on their archival work on the East German and Romanian secret services. Drs. Lewis, Petrescu, and Glajar are co-editing a book on this topic that will appear through the University of Nebraska Press. This event, organized by Dr. Glajar, enjoyed the generous support and co-sponsorship of Modern Languages, all departments in Liberal Arts, International Studies, the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Honors College.
