French 3381 – Business French I
Professor: Dr. Carole Martin, cm11@txstate.edu

FR 3381TR11:00pm-12:20pmCRN: 34750

Description: This course has a twofold purpose: 1) to develop an understanding of business conducted in French, and the way it differs from American business practices, through the analysis of concrete situations; 2) to prepare for the Diplômes de Français Professionnel [DFP] granted by the French Chamber of Commerce (CCI Paris-Ile de France). Case studies and corresponding strategies will be performed by students acting as professionals in major areas of corporate life such as management or human resources. In our marketing sequence, we will study French ad campaigns featuring celebrities and participate in a hybrid discussion with students from Rennes2 Université. This emphasis on authentic documents and oral practice will directly contribute to the students' preparation of the DFPs, for which the examinations will be offered at Texas State University at the end of the spring semester. Accredited by the CCI Paris-Ile de France, these diplomas officially acknowledge one's level of fluency. As such, the DFPs can be instrumental in the pursuit of a career with a French component – whether it is a job in a French firm located in the United States, an internship in an American company based in France, a position in Québec, an offer from a non-governmental organization in the Francophone world, etc. It is also used to validate officially one's request for a long-term visa to study or work in France. In short, this course is an essential step in furthering students' engagement with the French language.
