Learning Outcomes and Assessments: Spanish BA Program
The mission of the Spanish program in the Department of World Languages & Literatures is to provide an intellectual environment and a specialized body of knowledge that are conducive to students’ acquisition of proficiency in the language, literature, and culture of the Hispanic world. To achieve that goal, the Spanish BA program assesses graduating seniors in three broad areas: comprehension, production, and culture.
Outcome 1: Comprehension
Graduating seniors will demonstrate advanced-level reading and listening proficiency in Spanish.
Methods of assessment:
- Reading comprehension assessment based on a written Spanish-language text.
- Listening comprehension assessment based on a spoken Spanish-language passage.
Outcome 2: Production
Graduating seniors will demonstrate advanced-level writing and speaking proficiency in Spanish.
Methods of assessment:
- Evaluation of a written assignment completed in an upper-division Spanish course.
- Oral-production assessment evaluated by Spanish faculty.
Outcome 3: Culture
Graduating seniors will demonstrate advanced-level knowledge of Spanish and Hispanic cultures.
Methods of assessment:
- Evaluation of a written essay or open-ended exercise from an upper-division literature, culture, or linguistics course.
- Evaluation of a test, assignment, or activity related to Hispanic literature and culture.
Assessment benchmark:
For each outcome and method, the program expects that at least 70% of assessed graduating seniors will meet or exceed expectations.
